Maybe the only problem I see is that the sky is too heavy and dark.

Check out this one [link] if you like, it's the only one I'm satisfied with using manual HDR editing...
I'm agree that in hdr manipulation (marked plus or minus) the photo look less real and less deep in space. I use "Photomatix" software for this shoot because, for me (a newbie for this photo-genre), is an easy and friendly hdr software.
Your work infact is a perfect example between hdr and manul editing, and the photo doesn't look less real and deep.
As soon i have the free time, i try your method.
